The Internet is a global network that transmits a variety of data and media across the world. It was created by Bob Kahn on January 1, 1983. This day marked the start of computers that could communicate with each other. The Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) refers to the communication methods used within the Internet. Before the invention of the World Wide Web, accomplishing anything was very strenuous and took a long time.
The World Wide Web is defined by Google as "an information system on the Internet enabling documents to be connected to other documents accessible by everyone with an Internet connection." It is used to share information and connect people across the world. It was invented by a British man by the name of Sir Tim Berners-Lee in the early 1990's, but was then renamed "Nexus." Nexus competed with Microsoft Windows 95, which would ultimately outperform Nexus.
The biggest difference between the Internet of the past, and what it is today, has to do with the speed, more content, and a lot more users. The Internet was originally used for the US Defense Department allowing armed forces to communicate with each other over a distributed network. The difference between the Internet and World Wide Web is the Internet is defined as a global system of interconnected computer networks, whereas WWW is defined as a global collection of documents and other resources, linked by Hyperlinks and URI's.
These websites use hypertexts; which is essentially coded words or phrases that link to content. The first website was produced on August 6, 1991 by Tim-Berners-Lee and is still on the Internet today.
